The killing of Martha Farrell
May I copy on this message from ASPBAE, where Rajesh played, and plays, such a crucial role:
Dear ASPBAE members and friends,
It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing away of Dr. Martha Farrell, Director, PRIA, and wife of Rajesh Tandon (PRIA President and former ASPBAE President), in a terror attack in Kabul on Wednesday night, 13 May 2015. We in ASPBAE who have known her closely are still trying to come to terms with this sad, tragic news. We have known Martha for many years and are devastated to learn of her passing.
Martha was a strong woman, always very focused and determined. She was a great trainer, full of life, she was instrumental in mainstreaming gender in PRIA, and she always raised gender issues in all discourses. Martha was passionate about her work, she loved life, she was a keen traveller, and she was a great mentor to her team.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Rajesh Tandon, his two children, Suheil and Tarika, and to the PRIA team. We have lost a great champion for women, a wonderful person, and a dear friend.
Rest in peace Martha. We will miss you.
Condolences to Rajesh and PRIA may be sent to <[email protected]> and [email protected] ASPBAE Executive Council and Staff
Martha was a tower of strength in the wonderful PRIA family as well as in hers and Rajesh’s own. She was a model of constructive, generous, assertive feminism in the service of human development and in places of risk and extreme gender inequality like Afghanistan. Her work and spirit will live on.
Shocking news
I was absolutely shocked by this news came through yesterday via Budd Hall. Martha was a lovely woman with whom I shared some very pleasant times in India when I visited PRIA last year. I wish to pass on my own condolences and those of all of Rajesh's friends here in Glasgow and in PASCAL at this awful time for him and his family. As I said to Budd, these events seem so distant when we hear them on the news, but become so real in circumstances like this.
