Mobilising civil society to build inclusive, successful cities

Civil society complements government and the market in the development of sustainable, successful cities. Broad international shifts, such as the apparent waning of the idea of the welfare state, have drawn attention to the role that empowering civil society could make to inclusive, sustainable cities as, for example, in the UK debate on the concept of the Big Society.

PIE Stimulus Papers illustrate various ways in which civil society organisations have been harnessed to promote the well being of communities. This PIE Theme will probe these developments further and aim to clarify the role of civil society in successful cities.
