PIE Futures - Towards a Vision for Learning Cities 2020

This paper has been prepared to encourage discussion of future directions for the PASCAL International Exchanges (PIE) project beyond the PASCAL Cities Learning Together Conference in Hong Kong in November 2013. A set of eight possible objectives for the future are discussed in the paper.

Cities Learning Together: the PIE Experience

This paper draws on insights from the stimulus papers prepared for cities participating in the PASCAL International Exchanges that relate to the main themes of the PASCAL Cities Learning Together Hong Kong conference.

EcCoWell - Living and Learning in Sustainable Opportunity Cities

This paper has been prepared for the PASCAL Cities Learning Together Hong Kong conference in November 2013 to provide a short summary of the work undertaken under its PASCAL International Exchanges (PIE) project, to encourage more holistic and integrated approaches to building sustainable learning cities able to respond in a proactive way to the many challenges confronting cities.

Collective Intelligence Wellbeing Conference Workshop and Methodology

I have attached a preliminary report of our collective intelligence wellbeing conference workshop, where we focused on the design of a new national wellbeing index for Ireland.  I have also attached a report of our collective intelligence work from last year, where the lack of a national wellbeing index was identified as a significant barrier to wellbeing in Ireland.

Random Reflections July, 2013

Here is another set of random reflections for your perusal:

New York: A City of Neighbourhoods

A PIE stimulus paper on New York, "A City of Neighbourhoods" is now available on the PIE web site. The paper was written by Peter Kearns, the Co-director of PIE, based on research and discussions during a visit to New York in April to stay with family who live in one of the historic neighbourhoods of New York.

New York Stimulus Paper

It is often said that New York is a city of neighbourhoods. While this reflects the history of New York development in absorbing waves of immigrants coupled with the footprint of New York’s socio-economic development, much has been done in recent years to preserve and enhance the identity of New York neighbourhoods, and to resolve conflicts between development imperatives and the preservation of heritage and identity.

City Health 2013 - the 2nd City Health International Conference in Glasgow

Given the interests of PIE in Healthy Cities and the emphasis that Peter Kearns has made concerning this facet of the learning city within the EcCoWell model, and the strand of interest that we are trying to develop for the 11th PASCAL Conference in Hong Kong, this event in Glasgow may be of considerable interest to subscribers. We invite you to take a look at City Health 2013 in Glasgow from 4-5 November, which has many overlaps with the interests of PASCAL.

Dalai Lama Endorses the International Compassionate Cities Campaign: "Highly necessary, very important!"

On May 19th, 2013, Mayor Greg Fischer of Louisville introduced the Dalai Lama to a crowd of more than 15,000 in Louisville, KY. During the event, Mayor Fischer spoke about Louisville's Compassionate City campaign, reported that the city had signed the Charter for Compassion, and described how people from all walks of life have come together to awaken compassion in every aspect of life.

A particularly inspiring moment came when the Dalai Lama said…

PASCAL Welcomes Limerick to PIE

Limerick has become the second Irish city to participate in PIE, joining Cork. Both Limerick and Cork are notable as active Cities of Learning which conduct successful Lifelong Learning Festivals as one of the ways of promoting lifelong learning throughout the city. The Limerick Festival is now in its third year. Limerick has been innovative in responding to disadvantage identified in the Fitzgerald Report on Social Exclusion in Limerick (2006) with an active City of Learning Steering Group complementing measures such as the establishment of two regeneration agencies.
