CityNet to sponsor 13th PASCAL International Conference

We are delighted that our longstanding partner, Citynet based in Seoul, has agreed to be a sponsor of the 13th PASCAL Conference in Glasgow, 3-5 June, 2016. You will find an overview of Citynet in the SPONSORS section of the Conference website. We are also very pleased that Vijay Jagannathan. President of Citynet, has agreed to join one of PASCAL's Special Interest Groups that is working to forge stronger links with cities across the world. More details of this will be announced shortly.

Our hearts go out to all victims of terror

On behalf of PASCAL we post below a response made by our colleague Chris Duke on the campaigning website 38 Degrees with which we are sure that PASCAL subscribers will wish to echo. We could add many more examples of terrorist acts even in the last week, such as that of the 224 Russians most likely murdered over the Sinai desert, and as Chris says our hearts are with all victims of such atrocities.

Communities of Practice in Lifelong Learning - an Invitation

We are currently involved in a project called DISCUSS (see http://www.discuss-community.eu), which is supported by PASCAL about the development of communities of practice in lifelong learning. We know that many PASCAL subscribers have had many years of experience in such communities and wonder if some of you would be willing to write a short blog (just one page of response only is needed) about some of your experiences in the context of projects in the field of lifelong learning.

Glasgow - European Entrepreneurial Region for 2016

In July 2015, the  President of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), Markku Markkula, awarded Glasgow (UK), Lombardia (IT) and Małopolska (PL) as European Entrepreneurial Regions (EER) 2016. The Award ceremony was held in Brussels  after a jury, consisting of members from EU institutions and business associations, selected the regions' strategies as the best to promote entrepreneurship and spread innovation among small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Invitation to International Conference on Learning Cities - 28-30 September 2015

We strongly encourage all members of PASCAL and subscribers to consider attendance, particularly members cities and organisations of our Learning Cities Networks (LCN) program.

12th PASCAL Conference - Proposals for the Big Idea Sandpit - Deadline 7 August

Delegates for the 12th PASCAL Conference are invited to propose Big Ideas linked to the themes of the conference in advance of the event: five of these ideas will chosen to be pitched in plenary session on Day 2 with a strict 5 minute presentation. There will then be a debate and vote for the best idea. That idea will then be developed into a longer presentation by the presenter and advocates from the conference, and debated further on Day 3.

Latest Issue of Journal of Adult and Continuing Education dedicated to Jarl Bengtsson

The latest Issue of Journal of Adult and Continuing Education edited by guest editor, Hans Schuetze has been dedicated to the work of Jarl Bengtsson.

It contains articles from many of his close colleagues in PASCAL and within the OECD, including Hans himself, Chris Duke, Peter Kearns, Steve Garlick, Catherine Odora Hoppers, Bruce Wilson, Muir Houston and myself.

Active Travel in Singapore

Subscribers may be interested in the lastest issue of Urban Solutions from the Centre for Liveable Cities in Singapore. The topic is Active Mobility, a topic of interest to many of my colleagues in the Urban Big Data Centre here in Glasgow.

Urban Big Data PhD Scholarship - School choice and housing markets in urban Scotland

Applications are invited for one of three PhD studentships to commence in October 2015. The studentship is funded by the University of Glasgow and will be based within the Urban Big Data Centre (UBDC). It offers an excellent opportunity for outstanding candidates to join a world-leading interdisciplinary research group.
