Shanghai Forum on Lifelong Education

The Shanghai Municipal Institute for Lifelong Education (SMILE) in partnership with the National Center for Educational Development and Research and the National Center for Community Education Research and Development is convening a Shanghai Forum on Lifelong Education in Shanghai on 15 November immediately prior to the EU Centre/PASCAL Hong Kong Conference on 18-20 November. SMILE links the East China Normal University and Shanghai City Council in the development of the Shanghai Learning City initiative. Papers have been invited for the Forum from Beijing, Shanghai, and other Chinese learning cities.

Shanghai participates in the PASCAL International Exchanges (PIE) along with Beijing and Hong Kong. Shanghai is an innovative learning city which demonstrates how a learning city initiative can be successfully implemented in a mega city as large as Shanghai. The PIE paper on Shanghai by Professor Jian Huang may be read on the PIE web site.

The Shanghai Forum is envisaged as a permanent international summit forum on lifelong e3deucation and the learning city. Following the recent launch of the UNESCO International Platform on Learning Cities in Beijing, the Shanghai Forum further illustrates the international leadership that Chinese cities such as Beijing and Shanghai are taking in adapting the learning city concept to addressing the challenges confronting cities around the world. PASCAL will be represented at the Forum by the author of this blog and Denise Reghenzani-Kearns.
