Remembering Professor Peter Jarvis

Everyone in the lifelong learning community is greatly saddened at the news of the death of Peter Jarvis who passed away last Tuesday, 20th November.

Peter was one of the great luminaries of adult education and an inspiration to generations of practitioners, postgraduate students and researchers. He was the author of dozens of books and hundreds of articles, as well as his tireless work on journals, especially the International Journal of Lifelong Education which he founded and was its editor for many years. His book Adult Education and Lifelong Learning: Theory and Practice is a standard work on our bookshelves.

As Professor of Continuing Education at the University of Surrey he was a respected presence all over the world, known for his passionate commitment to democratic and inclusive lifelong learning. He is remembered by very many of us as a warm-hearted and generous friend and colleague and will be sorely missed among the lifelong learning community.

There will be a Thanksgiving service held at Thatcham Methodist Church, RG12 4QL (on the A4 between Newbury and Reading) at 12.45pm on Wednesday 12 December. This will be followed by a short committal at Thatcham Crematorium (2.15pm) before returning at 2.45 pm to the Methodist Church for refreshments. Please note that there is no parking at the church but there is as large Waitrose car park opposite.

Flowers are to be from Peter’s immediate family. However, should you wish to make a donation in Peter’s memory, you may select on from the following: Prostate Cancer UK, Dementia UK or Thatcham Volunteer Bureau.

Kind regards,
