East Asia: Some Background Influences

This paper draws on several East Asian papers, including several comparative papers, to give background on some of the influences that bear on learning in older life in these countries. In particular, several of the papers comment on the importance of traditional philosophies, such as Confucianism, that influence learning by seniors and the position of seniors in these societies. In addition I have attached a list of number of comparative studies, mostly involving East Asian countries, that are held in the Library of the Institute for Lifelong Learning in Hamburg. Refugee Week focussed attention on the issues people who have been forced to leave their homes face in a new country, new research identified the economic and social consequences of dropping out of school and rural mental health initiatives incorporating community education were all in the news this week.

The Israeli Parliament Education Committee: Government must devise a national plan to promote "Learning Cities"

We are pleased to inform you that this week the Education Committee of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, approved the model of the "Learning Cities" as a national program. The committee hosted the Chairman of the Union of Local Authorities, members of the Knesset, government ministries, organizations, students and youth representatives.

The Getting of Wisdom

Recently, an international collaborative exchange "The Getting of Wisdom" was organised by the peak adult and community education bodies of Australia (Adult Learning Australia) and New Zealand (ACE Aotearoa), in partnership with ELOA (Education and Learning by Older Adults) - a research network of ESREA (European Society for Research into the Education of Adults).  The gathering focussed on diverse contexts, social inequalities and empowerment/identity in later life.
