ALCN Ripples - June 2023

I sincerely welcome our new Executive, appointed at our AGM in May. I am particularly pleased to welcome new members to the Executive - Silvia Velez from Melton City Council, Dianne Hillier from Wollongong City Council, and Kay Delahunt from Tamworth Region. Diane Tabbagh is reappointed as Chair of the ALCN and I thank her for her continued support and leadership.

The name Jane Jacobs is familiar to many of our readers.  Jacobs, who died in 2007, celebrated almost everything about cities.  Although she was born and raised amid the economic and social decline of Depression-era Scranton, Pennsylvania, Jacobs became a devoted believer in the positive potential of cities to overcome economic crises and create widespread prosperity and rich cultural experiences for all residents.

In today's fast-paced world, the need for continuous learning among adults is more important than ever, particularly during times of crisis. This is a sentiment that the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) emphasised already 50 years ago, highlighting in their report ’Recurrent Education: A Strategy for Lifelong Learning (1973)’ (attached below).

ALCN Annual Report 2022-2023

This Annual Report summarises the work of the Australian Learning Communities Network (ALCN Inc.) and our place-based learning communities and cities. Also attached and featured below is a quick snapshot presentation by Associate Professor Jose Roberto (Robbie) Guevara, President of the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE), who reflected on how the work of the network members aligned with the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities and the Marrakech Framework for Action in Adult Education and Learning (ALE).
