Future PASCAL Developments – Associates and Members

The expansion of PASCAL International Observatory this Spring is an opportunity to strengthen the links among the universities that host PASCAL Centres, clarifying their roles and responsibilities.  This process, which could take several months, may take the form of a new memorandum, superseding previous agreements exchanged among the host institutions.

PASCAL appoints two new Associates

PASCAL is delighted to announce the appointment of Brian Holland and Rob Mark as Associates.

New Associate Directors in Europe

We are very pleased to announce that Dr Ilpo Laitinen, City of Helsinki, Professor Balázs Németh, University of Pecs and Professor Roberta Piazza, University of Catania, have been appointed as Associate Directors of PASCAL. They will respectively have responsibility for developing the work of PASCAL in the Nordic countries, Eastern and Central Europe, and in Southern Europe.

Making a Commonwealth Games Legacy Meaningful - a new International Legacy Network is launched

PASCAL, with links to Melbourne and Brisbane, Montreal and Vancouver, Barcelona, Helsinki, Glasgow and Manchester - all cities on 3 continents which have hosted or will host the Commonwealth Games or other mega-events such as the Olympics - can expect to play a role in developing the International Legacy Network, described in the attached documentation, and in building a tool kit to use the lessons of experience and facilitate knowledge exchange.

PASCAL Seasonal Greetings

Dear Friends,

As the new Chair of PASCAL, I want to wish each of you a happy holiday season - be it in the darker and wetter north or the warmer and sunnier south. The new year  brings with it  great prospects for our collaboration.  There is a vacuum for PASCAL to fill.  The 2012 conference in Brest was demonstration, if proof were needed, that our mission is timely, evidence-based, and forward-loooking. Tragically, Jarl Bengtsson died just at the time when we could celebrate the ten years of leadership he has given PASCAL. (An obituary will appear on the website soon). His wise counsel and good humor will be missed, but his values - our values - endure.  In some ways 2013 could be more difficult, globally, than 2012: the geo-political situation along the 30th parallel North is even more fraught with risk, and the long-term social consequences of the crisis will become more apparent.  Let's  bring the expertise and enthusiasm of PASCAL as a global network to bear on policy and practice, to develop the  Observatory and generate new projects.

May you and your families enjoy continued good health.  With best wishes,

Josef Konvitz
