The Talloires Network E-Newsletter - May 2012

The Talloires Network is one of the partners with whom PASCAL collaborates, and which is a co-signatory to the September 23 2010 Communique "Enhancing North-South Cooperation in Community-University Engagement".

The Network enjoys a high profile and is among the several national and international bodies encouraging universities worldwide to adopt a more centrally-focussed universities' 'third mission' commitment to community service in its different senses and settings.

Update from the Chair: President Mark Gearan

Mark GearanCollaboration with other groups that are advancing university civic engagement - regional, national and international networks - has been a primary commitment of the Talloires Network from the day it began. This continues to be a major focus of our efforts. An enormous strength of the global higher education civic engagement movement is the vision and dynamic leadership of the multiple coalitions that are operating at different geographic levels.

I would like to share a few examples of our current collaborations with other networks.  As I write this note, National University of Malaysia Vice-Chancellor (and Talloires Steering Committee member) Sharifah Shahabudin is hosting a "Regional Conference on Higher Education-Community-Industry Engagement," and formally launching AsiaEngage, a  growing alliance that already has over 60 member universities in 17 countries. Talloires Network Vice-Chair Jan Reid is representing TN at this historic gathering.  In her keynote on "Moving Beyond the Ivory Tower:  Opportunities and Challenges" Vice-Chancellor Reid announced a new partnership between TN and AsiaEngage on a joint process that will enable universities to join both networks in a single step. TN Senior Liaison Donald Wertlieb will be representing TN at the annual meeting of Ukrainian rectors in Sevastapol in early June (see article below). His keynote talk will explore opportunities for joint activity and will be followed by a ceremonial co-signing of the Talloires Declaration by Ukrainian rectors who are joining the Talloires Network. Talloires is collaborating with the New Eurasia Foundation on planning a week-long study tour this coming September by leaders of Russian Federal Research Universities on U.S. university civic engagement. Coordination of this initiative is being led by Campus Compact.

In recent newsletters we have communicated about collaboration with other networks - South African Higher Education Community Engagement Forum (organization of a series of national workshops), Construye Pais, the network of Chilean universities on social responsibility (seed grants to Talloires members) and Association of Commonwealth Universities (recent conference on "Universities Engaging with Gender Issues in Their Societies" and exploration of a joint initiative on university efforts to strengthen social inclusion through civic engagement).

In the coming year, how can the Talloires Network best collaborate with and support the work of sister alliances? We are eager to hear your ideas and recommendations.

Talloires Network Partners with Ukrainian Universities
Rectors and faculty from across Ukraine will gather June 7 to strengthen civic roles and social responsibilities of their universities through commitments to the principles of the Talloires Declaration. This year’s Ukrainian Universities Association conference will focus on “Strategies of Ukraine in Geopolitical Space” and will be hosted by Petro Mohyla Black Sea State University in Sevastopol, June 6-10. In the special event on June 7, Professor Donald Wertlieb, former Chairman of the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Development at Tufts University (USA) and Senior Liaison for the Talloires Network will address the conference on the “Engaged University, Enhanced Education: The Talloires Network Opportunity” as part of a celebration where Rectors will articulate their interests and progress in expanding higher education civic engagement programs through teaching, research, and public service through membership in the Talloires Network. Harley Etienne outlines the rationale for university-driven development and neighborhood revitalization balanced by caution for the limitations of the model. He provides a summary of the University of Pennsylvania's West Philadelphia Initiatives and the challenges and successes of this unique plan. Academy for Community and Civic Engagement. Auburn University, USA. 14-16 May 2012.

ACCE logoThe Community and Civic Engagement Initiative at Auburn University has announced the first annual Academy for Community and Civic Engagement (ACCE) for faculty throughout the American southeast in the arts and humanities who are interested in incorporating civic engagement/service learning practices into their courses, outreach scholarship, and P & T documentation. ACCE will provide an intense 3-day workshop for successful applicants. The purpose of the Academy for Community and Civic Engagement is:

  • To promote and develop community and civic engagement initiatives among faculty and colleges in the region;
  • To encourage faculty to develop courses with civic engagement/service learning experiences for students;
  • To foster collaborative teaching, research, and outreach efforts among faculty and across universities; and
  • To provide resources and support for community and civically engaged faculty.

2012 Engagement Academy for University Leaders, Roanoke, Virginia (USA), 4-8 June 2012.

Engagement AcademyThe Engagement Academy, developed by a national advisory group in 2008, has received awards for its innovation and quality. This annual executive development program is designed for leaders responsible for developing institutional capacity for community engagement. Participants from around the world will develop institutional plans for engagement and will return to their campuses with the ability to advance their plan as well as effectively link community engagement to the teaching, research, and service missions of the institution.
