150th Anniversary of birth of Gandhi-ji

We are organizing a series of events in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the birth of Gandhi-ji.  We will be holding a major event in India close to the October 2 date, but we are inviting all those interested to consider marking this date in some way, with a talk, a publication, a symposium or something still more creative. What does the life of Gandhi mean for the world today, for higher education, and knowledge democracy?

Marc Spooner and James McNinch of the Faculty of Education at the University of Regina were the co-chairs of a recent symposium held in the heartland of Western Canada.  The symposium brought together some of the best known critical participatory research, Indigenous, decolonising, knowledge democracy and higher education scholars in North America with the notable international addition of Dr. Linda Tuhiwai Smith, Maori scholar and Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Waikato, Aotearoa.

There is a new book called, "What Counts: Harnessing Data for America’s Communities," from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and the Urban Institute, which outlines opportunities and challenges for the strategic use of data to reduce poverty, improve health, expand access to quality education, and build stronger communities.

We are sharing two reports on civil society today.  Rajesh Tandon and a consortium of civil society organisations produced the first one, "Civil Society at a Crossroads"

The second report was carried out by the consultancy firm KMG for the World Social Forum with the idea of providing the global economic leaders a look in on civil society trends.

Greetings Friends,

First thank you all so very much for your support in getting information about the GUNi Call for Good Practices out last week; the deadline has been extend to February 10.  With your help the number of 'good practices' has more than doubled from around 45 to 94 as of today. There is still a need to receive short student videos and there is an opportunity to present posters as well.

Budd is heading to India to join Rajesh for the India Launch of the UNESCO Chair.  It will take place December 10th at the Jamia Millia Islamia, an impressive university in South Delhi founded by the muslim community.

Friends,

Our news today is coming from Brest, from the meeting of the PASCAL International Observatory where Rajesh and Budd have both been invited to offer keynote remarks.  This is the first time that we have appeared at the same event since the UNESCO Chair has been established.  We are very grateful to the University of Western Brittany and Dr. Jean-Marie Filloque for inviting us and to PASCAL for making us feel welcome amongst them.
