American Cities of Learning

A network of American Cities of Learning has emerged in the US with initiatives in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Washington, Dallas, and Los Angeles. While Cities of Learning have much in common with Learning Cities they have a focus on youth rather than the whole lifecycle in most Learning Cities. They involve coalitions of partners that might involve museums, libraries, parks, and other local institutions. They are anchored by principles of 'connected learning' in an interest-driven approach designed to make learning relevant for young people. The Cities of Learning movement is supported by the John D and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
