Andres Coca-Stefaniak is Head of Research and International Partnerships at the Association of Town and City Management, Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Innovation Management and Enterprise (University of East London), advisor to the UK Government on town and city centre competitiveness (DCLG Future High Streets Forum) and former founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of Town and City Management. Following seven years in industry, including international management appointments with Shell International and Anglo American plc, he has worked ten years in academia as Transnational Manager, Senior Lecturer, Project Director and Programme Director of various postgraduate place management qualifications with teaching and research outputs linked to various aspects of the learning cities framework, including the creation and sustainability of public-private urban revitalisation partnerships, international models of town centre (downtown) management, city marketing and branding, place management, high street (downtown) competitiveness and retail management. During the last ten years, Andres has secured over 6 million euros of European Union funding and delivered international projects with national/regional town centre management associations, city councils, chambers of commerce, universities and regional development agencies in 14 European countries. Andres is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Fellow of the Institute of Place Management, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, International Advisor to the International Downtown Association, Member of the Global Development Group and editorial board member of the Journal of Place Management and Development as well as the Journal of Urban Regeneration and Renewal.

 

Andres holds a doctorate (Middlesex University, UK) in town centre management and urban revitalisation, an MSc in Management (Manchester Metropolitan University, UK), an MSc in Engineering Rock Mechanics (Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, UK), a BEng (Hons) degree in Mining Engineering (University of Nottingham, UK), and a Postgraduate Diploma in Management (University of York, UK).

 

He has published internationally on various topics related to learning cities and advised municipalities and businesses in Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom on the development of private-public partnerships for the sustainable socio-economic development of town and city centres, social innovation, strategic place branding and change management. He speaks Polish, Spanish and English fluently and is currently learning Italian and Russian.
