The City of Sydney is the local government area [5] covering the Sydney central business district [6] and surrounding inner city suburbs of the greater metropolitan area of Sydney [7], New South Wales [8], Australia [9].
The central business district of Sydney is roughly bounded by Circular Quay [10] and Sydney Harbour [11] to the north, Macquarie Street [12] to the east, Darling Harbour [13] to the west and Liverpool Street [14] and Central railway station [15] to the south.
On 6 February 2004, the former local government area of the City of South Sydney [16] was formally merged into the City of Sydney. Suburbs within the City of South Sydney before the merger included Alexandria [21], Darlington [22] (now mostly occupied by the University of Sydney [23]), Erskineville [24], Newtown [25], Redfern [26], Glebe [27], Waterloo [28], Paddington [29].
