Remembering Anne Jones and Angus Hawkins

We were saddened to hear of the death of Professor Anne Jones. Anne was a leading educationalist during her long career, and finally became Professor of Continuing Education and Director of the Centre for Lifelong Learning at Brunel University. UALL colleagues will remember Anne as a visitor to Conferences where she was always a colourful and unmissable character. A tribute to Anne from the Guardian is available here.

A memorial celebration for Angus Hawkins was held at Keble College on 9th October, with a great many friends and colleagues filling Keble's vast chapel. Angus was a distinguished Professor of History at Oxford, with a very impressive reputation for scholarship and publication. He combined this distinction with his work as Director of Public Programmes in the Oxford Department of Continuing Education, in which role he was deeply committed to adult education, and served on UALL's Executive Committee.

UALL colleagues will recall Angus's passion for accessible higher education, together with his energy, good humour and unmistakable laughter. The world of lifelong learning, as well as in his other spheres of activity - especially Victorian history, and music - is the poorer for his loss. A tribute to Angus is available on our website here

Kind regards

Verity
