Gauteng City-Region Observatory [10]

Having been in South Africa last week I was alerted to the Gauteng City-Region Observatory [11], and was pleased to see that it includes amongst its work a project on Transformation in Higher Education [12], which examines of ''how the concept of a ‘learning region’ may be applied to the Gauteng City-Region (GCR), through the institutional vehicle of the region’s higher education institutions''. Beijing Institute for the Learning Society [14]

We are posting today a note from Professor Li Chen, Executive Director of the Beijing Institute for the Learning Society, on the work of the Institute. Beijing is distinctive in establishing a research institute to support its policy to develop as a learning city (see below). The Institute integrates research from around the world in progressing this objective.

I am continuously finding networks with synergies to the work we are doing in Learning Cities. The following two are of interest:

Liveable cities [19] - a Singapore based network.

Fundacion Metropoli [20], Spanish foundation focussing on city networks.

These came from a paper [21] by John Matthews about cities as leaders of green transformation.
