The mission of the HKIEd, Centre for Lifelong Learning Research and Development, is to enhance – through research and development – the quality, impact and understanding of the contribution of Lifelong Learning and education to the society and economy.
The work of the CLLRD focuses on particular research and development programme areas in the field. These will change over time, as needs and priorities change in the broader communities that its serves. At the present time, the main programme areas of the Centre’s work are:
- Older learners and lifelong learning;
- Teacher education for lifelong learning;
- Vocational learning in schools;
- Politics and ethics in lifelong learning;
- International comparative perspectives on lifelong learning;
- Situated lifelong learning.
To pursue learning and foster a sense of worthiness among elders, the Labour and Welfare Bureau and the Elderly Commission of the HKSAR launched a school-based Elder Academy Scheme in early 2007. Later, the scheme was expanded to the tertiary level. The Hong Kong Institute of Education Elder Academy was thus established in 2008. It aims to take a leading role in: (1) providing Elder Academy teacher training and other professional development opportunities in Hong Kong; (2)research and development in elder learning and education; and (3) public education in this field.
The HKIEd Elder Academy, under the CLLRD, is working towards these goals by organising public seminars, providing traditional and informal learning opportunities for the elderly, developing and offering training opportunities and resources for tutors and coordinators in Elder Academies across Hong Kong, and undertaking research and development projects in elderly learning and education.
